Will You Be Safer in 2018?
Last week the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a new rule designed to protect motorists from being ejected from their vehicles during a rollover crash. The rule, which will begin to be phased in by car manufacturers during 2013 will become mandatory by 2018.
When the rule is fully in place, car manufacturers will be required to provide protection that would prevent an unseatbelted adult from moving more than 4 inches past the side window opening during a crash. In other words, side airbags would need to be made larger so that a person could not fall out of a window during a rollover accident.
The estimated cost of providing this additional protection is just $31 per vehicle. As Pennsylvania car accident lawyers, it seems to us to be a small price to pay to prevent rollover crash injuries and fatalities.
