Why You Need to Use Extra Care on the Road on Tax Day
Today is tax day. A day that brings anxiety and stress to many Americans as they rush to get their taxes, and their tax checks, in the mail before the looming deadline. As important as it is to get your taxes in on time, a new study has found that you should have another concern and priority today – and every tax day going forward.
That concern is your safety on the roads.
Why You Need to Use Extra Care on the Road
According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association car accident fatalities are more likely on tax day than on other days. In reaching this conclusion, researchers examined traffic fatality data from 1980 – 2009 and found that 19,500 people have died on tax days over the past three decades compared to the 13,000 people who have died on the control days (a week before and a week after tax day) over the past thirty years. In other words, on average, 13 more people die in fatal accidents on tax day than on other days.
It remains unclear exactly why the risk of car accident deaths is increased on tax day. Is it lack of sleep? Anxiety? Alcohol use? Whatever the reason, our accident and injury lawyers encourage you to be aware of the risk and to drive safely today.
