Important News about Car Rear View Cameras
It costs about $200 to install a rear view mirror on an automobile. Many cars already have rear view mirrors installed so that the number of injuries and fatalities caused by cars backing up over pedestrians and young children can be reduced. However, as of April 2012, there is not yet a federal regulation that requires law makers to install rear view cameras. In late February, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation said rear view camera rules will be delayed until the end of 2012.
It is unclear whether this delay will push back the date by which manufacturers will be required to have rear view cameras installed which has been widely expected to be in 2014. In the meantime, cars moving in reverse kill almost 300 people every year and injure approximately 20,000 people. Many victims are young children under age 5.
Our accident and injury lawyers urge motorists to be careful when backing up and we will continue to monitor the development of safety regulations to help prevent future accidents.
