December 18 Central Pennsylvania Crash
Two people died and dozens suffered injuries in a 60-vehicle crash on December 18, 2019 when snow squalls suddenly swept across I-80. PennDOT estimated that visibility was eight to ten feet during the snow squalls. In addition to reducing visibility to a dangerous level, the snow quickly coated the highway, creating slippery conditions. One meteorologist suggested that the snow may have melted on the road surface and refroze into a sheet of ice.
As the chain-reaction crash continued to occur, people in smaller vehicles took cover in the trees lining the highway to avoid the impact of any oncoming semis. First responders transported dozens of people to area hospitals including Evangelical Hospital and Geisinger Medical Center.
