How To Keep Your Children Safe in the Car: Pennsylvania Car Seat Laws

Approximately 7,000 children under the age of five are involved in Pennsylvania car crashes each year, according to the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual published by the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles.  For the safety of all children, ages birth – 18, Pennsylvania has enacted child restraint laws.

Pennsylvania Child Restraint Laws

  • Children Under the Age of 4: must ride in federally approved child passenger restraint systems (also known as car seats) that are securely attached to the vehicle seat and they must be appropriately buckled;
  • Children Ages 4 -8: must be appropriately buckled in federally approved child booster seats;
  • Children Ages 8 – 18: must be buckled in a seat belt.

Any driver who has a passenger in his or her car that is aged 18 or younger who is not appropriately restrained may be fined and incur court costs.
