Dog Bite Injuries Rise Dramatically from 1993 – 2008

A new report from the Agency for Health Research and Quality shows that dog bite injuries are a growing problem in the United States.

The report shows that dog bite injuries requiring hospitalization rose a staggering 86% from 1993 – 2008. In 2008, there were approximately 316,200 emergency room visits for dog bite injuries and approximately 9,200 hospitalizations.  Common reasons for hospitalizations included open wounds and infections.

It is currently unclear what is causing the increase in dog bite injuries.  The report’s authors note that pet ownership has increased during this time, but not by 86%.
