Distracted Driving Deaths Increasing in the United States
In the past couple of years, the federal government and local advocacy groups have been doing their best to educate drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. While their work has likely saved lives, there is still a lot of work to be done.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Transportation held the Second Annual Distracted Driving Summit. Statistics regarding distracted driving were released and the numbers were alarming. The government statistics indicate that distracted driving hurt approximately 1.5 million people last year and killed about 5,000 people.
Additionally, the National Highway Transportation Safety Association found that fatalities caused by distracted driving have increased 10 – 16% between 2005 and 2009 even as overall traffic fatalities fell during that time.
