What to Do When You Witness a Pennsylvania Car Crash

Nothing about your drive was unusual, until the situation changed. You were driving along, as you always do, when suddenly the car in front of you, behind you, or to the side of you crashed into another vehicle or stationary object.

Your first thought was likely I am not hurt. My car was not hit. As you take a deep and grateful breath that you were not physically involved in the accident, you wonder what you should do next to help the accident victims.

As attorneys for injury victims, we encourage you to:

  • Pull over and stay at the scene of the accident.
  • Call 911 immediately.
  • Stay in your car if there are any downed power lines or if any of the other people at the accident scene appear to be drunk, drugged, or dangerous.
  • Let first responders move injured victims. You do not want to risk further injury to a victim by attempting to move the victim.
  • Tell the police what you witnessed. It could be important to the crash investigation.
  • Share your name and address in case your testimony is needed later.

Additionally, it is important to take care of yourself. Even if you were not part of the collision, you may have suffered an injury if your car stopped suddenly.

By following these steps, you will not only take care of yourself but also be a good and responsible neighbor to your fellow drivers who are in need. Being in an accident is never easy, but by offering support at the accident scene, you may help ease someone else’s burden.
