Is a Warning All it Takes to Stop Unfit Drivers?

In some cases it may be, according to a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study found that unfit drivers were less likely to crash and end up in the emergency rooms when their doctors had warned them that they were unfit to drive because of their medical conditions.

Researchers caution, however, that doctors’ warnings about driving dangers may have the unintended consequence of leading patients to stay away from doctors’ offices in the future. Specifically, patients were found to go to the doctor less in the year following such a discussion and also seemed to have a higher likelihood of suffering depression.

Accordingly, it is up to individual doctors to weigh the potential consequences of such a discussion against the potential benefits of such a discussion. The benefits may include fewer car accidents and fewer injuries to the patient and to others who could be harmed in a crash.

If you have been hurt in a Pennsylvania car accident then you may be able to recover damages even if the crash was caused by another driver’s medical condition. Please contact an experienced PA auto accident lawyer to learn more.
