When you take Amtrak, you expect your train to be delayed. You expect that your train will be crowded and that you might be uncomfortable.

On May 12, 2015, Amtrak failed to meet expectations. Amtrak Train 188 was headed from Washington DC to New York City when it derailed just north of Philadelphia.
At the time of the crash, there were 238 passengers and five crew members on the six car train. The train was mangled. Several passengers were trapped. Seven people died and more than 200 were injured.
NTBS Investigation Finds Train Was Speeding
The Northeast Corridor from Washington DC to New York City is the nation’s busiest train route. It is popular with congressmen and others who work in government. Immediately after the accident, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sent investigators to the scene. The initial investigation showed that the crash may have been caused by high speeds.
Surveillance video from the crash site shows that the train was traveling at 107 mph at the time of the crash. This is more than twice the 50 mph speed limit for that section of track. As the investigation continues, the NTSB will also look into the condition of the track and equipment, crew member training, and the black box recordings of other trains traveling the same portion of track.
While the NSTB investigates, Amtrak’s lawyers are taking action.
