When winning is the only option

Do You Need Grief Counseling?

The loss of someone we love will cause one of the most traumatic, stressful, and emotionally challenging times in our lives.

Grief CounselingBecause the death of a loved one is inevitable, at some point in life we are all going to have to deal with grief at some point.  Sometimes the grief and despair can be overwhelming. When this happens, consider grief counseling. In order to succeed in grief counseling, you must be open enough to accept a few truths and get past some of the common myths associated with grief counseling.

You Are Not Weak

One of the common myths surrounding grief counseling is that only people who are weak need it. This is not true.

Grief is normal and it’s prudent to seek out advice and comfort in a professional and safe environment.  Don’t let your pride or fear get in the way. Have enough insight to accept any help or assistance that may make this time easier. Grief counseling is often the best help you will find during this painful time.

Be Open to Learning

By seeking out grief counseling or joining a grief support group, you will better understand the grieving process. Sharing your situation with others who are going through the same process and pain that you are can be comforting, and you can learn from and support each other.

If group counseling is not for you, at least right away, that’s normal too. You could seek out individual grief counseling sessions to learn some of the coping skills you need to get through this time in your life, as well has having a safe, sympathetic environment in which to grieve.

Interview Different Counselors

It may be helpful to talk to different grief counselors before deciding which one you are most comfortable with. Take a list of questions with you, and make sure you are satisfied with the answers.

For example, you will want to know how long they’ve been a grief counselor, what methods they use, if they prescribe medication, and if they’ve suffered their own significant loss.  Choose the grief counselor that not only gave you good answers to your questions, but who also made you feel at ease, and who you feel was the most earnest and able to assist you through this difficult time.

Lean on your Clergyman

Whatever your faith, if you have come to know and trust your clergyman, this may be the perfect person to turn to in this time of need.. Most seasoned clergymen frequently assist those they serve during their time of grief.

The most important thing is to find someone you can talk to and turn to when your grieving seems like more than you can handle.

Though the grieving process is normal, it is never easy. Sometimes we need help from trained professionals to assist us in mourning our loss. If you feel that you are being consumed with grief, and not moving forward in your life after suffering this type of loss, you may want to seek out a qualified grief counselor to help you and your family heal during this difficult time.
