7 Summer Safety Tips for Pennsylvania Drivers

Are you getting ready for a summer road trip?  Will you be spending more time traveling to and from picnics and parties?  Many Pennsylvanians spend more time driving in the summer months than they do during other seasons.  However, while the ice and snow are (thankfully!) gone, summer does bring its own special driving hazards.

Here are 7 tips that can keep you safe on the roads this summer:

  1.  Don’t Drink and Drive: drunk driving often leads to fatal accidents.  Always have a designated driver.
  2. Don’t Text and Drive: texting and driving is dangerous and should always be avoided.
  3. Don’t Let Your Car Overheat: an overheated car can breakdown in a dangerous spot and put you at risk of injury.
  4. Slow Down: speeding is a common cause of summer accidents.
  5. Know Where You’re Going: Looking at a map, calling someone for directions, or using a GPS can distract you from watching the road.  Make sure you know where you are going before you get behind the wheel.
  6. Wear Your Seatbelt: seatbelts save lives.  Everyone killed in Pennsylvania motor vehicle accidents over Memorial Day Weekend was not wearing a seatbelt.  Wear yours in case an accident is unavoidable.
  7. Drive Defensively: assume that the drivers around you have not followed the six rules described above.  Keep a safe distance from them and be aware of those around you.

That said, go!  Go on your road trip, go visit family, go enjoy a barbeque with friends but do it safely.
